At the recent State FBLA Leadership Conference, Toombs County High School Teacher, Ms. Jessica Jones, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), receiving the prestigious Region 2 FBLA Adviser of the Year Terry Smith Award. In just two years as an FBLA Adviser, Ms. Jones has already made an impact, leading her students to remarkable achievements on both the state and national levels.
Under Ms. Jones' guidance, the Toombs County FBLA chapter has seen tremendous growth and success. Two of her students have advanced to the national FBLA competition, a testament to her dedication and commitment to student excellence. Last year, the chapter was recognized as a Silver Champion Chapter, and this year, they are on track to achieve Gold Champion Chapter status.
Before joining the faculty at Toombs County High School, Ms. Jones taught 4th grade reading at Lyons Upper Elementary School. Though her teaching focus has shifted to business education, her passion for helping students discover their interests remains unchanged. "What I love most about my job is helping students find their passion," Ms. Jones shared. "Learning about business is an integral part of students' lives, and seeing them succeed is incredibly rewarding."
Ms. Jones' recognition as Region 2 FBLA Adviser of the Year emphasizes her commitment to shaping the future of young business leaders.

Toombs County High School Junior Alex Patrick has secured his place on the national stage after an outstanding performance at the FBLA State Leadership Conference. Competing in the Agribusiness category, Patrick placed 3rd, earning a coveted spot at the National FBLA Conference, set to take place in Anaheim, California, this June.
Patrick’s achievement is a testament to his dedication and leadership within FBLA. Currently serving as the chapter vice president, he has played a crucial role in the success and growth of Toombs County’s FBLA program. His commitment to the organization has been recognized with his election as a Region 2 officer, a prestigious role that allows him to contribute to FBLA’s mission on a broader scale.
"Competing at the state level was an incredible experience, and I’m honored to be advancing to nationals," said Patrick. "I’m grateful for the support of my adviser and fellow members, and I’m excited to represent Toombs County at the national level."
The National FBLA Conference will bring together top business students from across the country, providing them with opportunities to compete, network, and gain valuable career insights. Patrick’s journey to this stage highlights both his individual excellence and the strength of Toombs County High School’s FBLA program.
Patrick continues to make his school and community proud with his impressive accomplishments and leadership roles. As he prepares for the national competition, he carries with him the support of his peers and the hope of bringing home another victory for Toombs County.

Toombs County High School Principal Marissa Morris has been named the Georgia TSA Administrator of the Year, a prestigious honor recognizing her outstanding contributions to STEM education and her unwavering support for Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) programs.
Mrs. Morris was recognized at the Georgia TSA State Conference last week for her leadership in fostering an environment where students and teachers thrive in Engineering and Technology Pathway Courses. She was nominated for the award by Mr. Jess Bush, the engineering instructor at Toombs County High School, who praised her dedication to student success and her commitment to providing opportunities for growth both inside and outside the classroom.
“Mrs. Morris goes above and beyond to ensure the success of every student, creating a culture of support, motivation, and academic excellence,” Mr. Bush stated in his nomination.
The Georgia TSA State Leadership Conference recognized Mrs. Morris during the First General Session on March 13 at the Akins Arena in Athens, Georgia.
Principal Morris’s dedication continues to have a lasting impact on students, staff, and the Toombs County community.

Kinsley Jeter, a 5th grader at Lyons Upper Elementary, participated in the Georgia Music Educators Association’s Statewide Elementary Honor Chorus. Approximately 300 of the best elementary singers in Georgia gathered at the Classic Center in Athens to rehearse and perform challenging and beautiful choral arrangements. At the finale of the concert the students performed a choral arrangement of Bill Withers’ song, Lovely Day. The finale included a solo part which Jeter auditioned for and received. The entire choir accompanied Jeter as she performed beautifully for a packed out Classic Center theater audience of about 2100 people. To simply be chosen to attend the Statewide Elementary Honor Chorus is a tremendous honor, but to receive the one solo for the evening truly distinguishes her in a class by herself. Jeter represented Toombs County and Toombs County Schools well as she sang beautifully on the stage.

This prestigious recognition highlights the dedication of Toombs County Schools to emergency preparedness, ensuring that students and staff are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to respond to various safety situations.
The Toombs County School System is proud to announce that Toombs County High School and Toombs Central Elementary School have been awarded the “Ready Georgia Seal of Preparedness” by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) and the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS).
While these two schools have received the official recognition this year, all five schools in the system (Toombs County High School, Toombs County Middle School, Lyons Primary School, Lyons Upper Elementary School, and Toombs Central Elementary) participated in the application process, reflecting a system-wide dedication to safety and preparedness. The commitment shown by each school reinforces the Toombs County School System’s proactive approach to student and staff well-being.
Superintendent Barry Waller praised the collective efforts of administrators, teachers, and support staff across the district, stating, “Our goal is to ensure that every Toombs County school remains a safe place for students and staff to learn and grow. This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and staff, and we are proud of all our schools for their ongoing efforts in emergency preparedness.”
The district will continue to build on these efforts, striving for excellence in safety measures across all campuses. The schools that were not awarded the seal this year remain committed to the same high standards.
The Toombs County School System commends all of its schools for their dedication to student safety and remains focused on continuous improvement to ensure the well-being of every child, every day.

Toombs County High School has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence by earning the prestigious 2025 AP Honor School – Challenge School designation. This recognition, awarded by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), highlights schools with enrollments of 900 or fewer students that have successfully administered at least 25 Advanced Placement (AP) exams in English, math, science, and social studies.
The honor reflects the hard work and dedication of Toombs County High School’s educators and students, who continue to embrace the challenges of advanced coursework. AP courses provide students with college-level academic experiences, and those who earn a score of 3, 4, or 5 on their AP exams may receive college credit, giving them a head start on their post-secondary education.
State School Superintendent Richard Woods commended this year’s 301 AP Honor Schools from across 104 districts, emphasizing their role in preparing students for success in college and careers. “Georgia's 2025 AP Honor Schools exemplify our commitment to providing students with rigorous, high-quality educational opportunities that prepare them for success beyond high school,” Woods stated.
At Toombs County High School, this recognition demonstrates the school’s ongoing efforts to expand learning opportunities and challenge students to reach their highest potential. Superintendent Barry Waller praised the achievement, stating, “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our teachers and staff. Their commitment to academic excellence ensures that our students are well-prepared for the future.”
The Toombs County School District remains committed to supporting AP programs and enhancing advanced learning opportunities for students. This accomplishment is a reflection of the hard work put in by both educators and students, and the district looks forward to continuing this tradition of academic success.

Toombs Family Connection partnered with Toombs County Schools to implement a new pilot program called MENTOR Toombs. This program goes along with the Get TOOMBS Reading initiative that our community has been working toward for the last few years. Last month Paige Williamson, Toombs Family Connection Director, and Rhonda Benton, Toombs County Schools’ Family Engagement Coordinator, met with Leslie Hale from MENTOR Georgia to learn best practices and prepare to train other volunteers themselves. Tuesday, February 18, a group of eleven volunteers from our community met for the first official MENTOR Toombs training. During that time, participants practiced leading activities, learned WHY a program like this is important now, and took turns reading to one another to listen for sight words and better understand the mentor role. This program is focused on literacy and it’s specific to first grade students at Lyons Primary School at this time. We hope to expand to other schools and grades next year.
The requirements to participate in this program are as follows:
Application
Background Check
4 Hour Training
Weekly Commitment of one-two hours per week
If you or someone you know would be interested in joining this program for the next school year, please contact Paige Williamson at familyconnection9@gmail.com or Rhonda Benton, rhonda.benton@toombs.k12.ga.us.
