(UPDATED 10/1/24) Dear Students, Staff, Families, and Community Members: As you all know, the devastation to our community is widespread and despite the efforts of so many, it is taking longer to resume a sense of normalcy than we had hoped. As we continue to monitor the restoration of services and navigate the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we believe that it is best to keep school closed at least through Friday, Oct 4 for students and staff. Our efforts need to continue focusing on the healing of our community and working with all of our emergency management agencies. We are currently using Toombs County Middle School as a 250-cot staging area for Georgia Power and assisting GEMA with the distribution of supplies in the southern part of the county. We are especially grateful for Altamaha EMC and the efforts of other power companies to restore power to our schools, and we currently have power to all schools except TCHS. We are working diligently to make any possible repairs and to get all buildings back to working order. Just like our families, our school system is also facing the challenge of obtaining food needed to begin feeding our students again. We will continue to update you as we know more. We are currently looking at plans for school reentry, and our goal is to update you by Friday afternoon regarding the plan for moving forward. Please help us by sharing this updated information, and stay tuned for updates via our various communication platforms: Facebook, Email, Toombs App, School Websites, Instagram, etc.

weather
After consultation and recommendations from state and local emergency management, our area is anticipating severe weather from Hurricane Helene overnight Thursday and continuing into the early hours of Friday morning. We are anticipating the weather to be out of our area by Friday around lunch. However, with the uncertainty of potential damage, power outages, road issues, and with the safety of all of our stakeholders in mind, the Toombs County School System will be closed for students and staff on Friday, September 27th. We will return to normal operations on Monday, September 30th. Please stay tuned to our social media outlets and communication tools for any further updates.

Early next week, all Toombs County schools will be conducting practice lockdown drills required by HB 147. The drills must be conducted by October 1st of each year as part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and preparedness of our students and staff. The drills will take place during the school day and will follow established safety protocols. Key Points to Note: Drills will occur at each school, with staff guiding students throughout the process. Local law enforcement will be present to assist and monitor. These drills are purely precautionary and designed to ensure everyone knows the proper procedures in case of an actual emergency. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together to keep our schools safe. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school administration.

How do you feel when you get a compliment/encouragement from a stranger? Pretty good? It's a good feeling when someone notices something about you. But what about when someone you really care about compliments/encourages you? That's a great feeling, and it's what our kids feel when we use words to point out how special they are. A child who feels valued and accepted by his or her family can change the world. So don't underestimate the importance of keeping a list of compliments/words of encouragement for kids on hand. If you struggle to be creative with your words, here is a list to try.
